On Wednesday evening, a fund-raiser for mayoral hopeful John Liu was arrested for violating campaign finance laws. According to authorities and an investigation conducted by the FBI, Xing Wu “Oliver” Pan used “straw donors” to accept donations from individuals to circumvent laws limiting political donations. An undercover FBI agent approached Pan, indicating an interest to donate 16000 dollars to the Liu campaign, despite this amount being over three times the legal limit for financial support to elected officials. But Pan assured him donating the large sum would be no problem. The fund-raiser had individual donors give comparatively small amounts of money — usually 800 dollars, to the Liu campaign. Pan would then reimburse these donors with the undercover agent’s large contribution. Liu, 44, is a Taiwanese immigrant who moved to Flushing when he was five. Less than 30 years later, he would successfully run for City Council representative for the same district in which he grew up. In large part due to strong support from New York’s Asian community, Liu was overwhelmingly elected to became the city’s Comptroller in 2009. His popularity spurred talks of a mayoral run, and he has been named as a front-runner for the job. The Liu campaign has been beset by controversy for several months now.
