raffle

Raffle. Lottery. Pay money for a chance to win. What’s the real difference between a raffle and a lottery? Is there a difference? If you say “yes” then what is it? If you say “no” then why do we have two words?
And if you think a lottery is just for money, there was a “draft lottery” back in the 70’s. Also they hold lotteries for limited permits to raft the grand canyon.

yes, the difference is with a raffel you are paying money for a chance to win a physical price (ex.tv,quilt…) where as a lottery is strictly for money

The difference between a raffle and a lottery is that in a raffle people enter their names on a piece of paper and the winner is chosen at random. And a lottery is when you choose numbers at random and take a chance to see whether you are a winner. So actually they are the same thing except that in one you use your name and you don’t have to pay, and in the other you use numbers, but you do have to pay.

    LOTTERY
    1) a drawing of lots in which prizes are given to the winning names or numbers
ie: when you enter your name and/or pay for a “ticket” and your name/numer/s is pulled you win the stated prize

    2)a matter determined by chance
ie: when your name or number is pulled from a drawing you are required to perform a specific task (such as the draft lottery; when your number is pulled you are required to report for military duty)

    RAFFLE
a lottery in which the prize is won by one of a number of persons buying a chance
ie: you buy a raffle ticket and if your name/number is pulled you win a specific prize

So, there really is not a difference between the two. Just in the “prize” and the payment/method for entry into the drawing.

Yes, in a raffle a person calls off numbers, and the person with the matching numbers wins a PRIZE. In the lottery a person calls off numbers and, if you have them you win MONEY.
